The Silent Crisis of the Silver Era

Introduction


This is personal for me. I think about the person I will become, the one who will need patience, dignity and fair treatment, and I think about how the world often fails to extend those things to people simply because of their age.

The world's population is changing fast. The number of people aged 60 and older is expected to double by 2050. That's good news in many ways, since it means people are living longer, thanks to advances in public health. But this longer life expectancy has also come with a rise in ageism, the stereotypes, prejudice and unfair treatment aimed at people because of their age. In 2021, the World Health Organization called ageism a major barrier to health equity and economic growth1.

Ageism is different from other forms of discrimination because it targets a version of ourselves that we will all eventually become. This article looks at the economic and biological costs of ageism, the ways it shows up in new technology and proven strategies for building stronger connections between generations.


The Economic Burden of Exclusion


Age discrimination is unfair. And it hurts the economy. As populations age, the cost of supporting them naturally grows. But policies that push older adults to the sidelines make this cost even worse5. When older workers are forced out of their jobs, we lose their knob-how knowledge, the hard won, hands on know how that isn't written down anywhere but comes from years of experience, and fewer people remain in the workforce to help fund pension systems.

The healthcare costs linked to ageism are substantial. Ageism is believed to add billions of dollars to healthcare spending every year1. Research on ageing populations shows that policies which help people stay healthy longer could meaningfully lower healthcare costs per person, yet ageist attitudes often stand in the way of these preventive measures5.


Biological Mechanisms


Ageism affects our wallets and our access to care. It can also change our bodies at a cellular level. A 2022 review found a clear connection between long term social stress and the biological markers of ageing, called telomere length2. Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes. They naturally get a little shorter each time a cell divides, and when they shorten too quickly, it speeds up cellular senescence, the process by which cells stop dividing and start ageing.


Living in an environment full of ageist attitudes triggers the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, the body's central stress response system, raising levels of the stress hormone cortisol. High cortisol is linked to inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which damage DNA and interfere with an enzyme called telomerase that normally helps maintain those protective telomere caps2,7. A 2024 article in Frontiers in Endocrinology explains that chronic social stress speeds up telomere shortening and raises the risk of dying earlier. In other words, it can shorten our lifespan7. On the flip side, people who hold positive beliefs about ageing tend to live longer, and this advantage shows up in real, measurable changes at the cellular and genetic level.


Systemic Barriers in the Algorithmic Age


Ageism is becoming harder to fight because it is now built into modern technology. As hiring has moved online, age bias has crept into the artificial intelligence systems used to screen job applicants. A 2025 study in Nature found that AI language models used to review resumes showed clear bias against older women3. These systems often described women as younger and less experienced than they were, while rating resumes from older men more favourably than those from older women with similar experience.


This kind of bias is hard to spot because it hides behind the appearance of neutral, data driven decisions. On top of that, job listings often use coded language like ‘digital native’ or ‘high energy’ phrases that just mean young, which can filter out experienced candidates before a human even reviews their application.


Strategies for Mitigation and Inclusivity


Fighting ageism means tackling both the structural barriers and the mindsets behind them. Reviews of research from 2023 and 2025 show strong evidence that bringing younger and older people together works well. A 2025 review found that programmes creating real, meaningful contact between generations consistently improved mental health and reduced ageist attitudes on both sides4. A 2023 analysis of many studies found a solid, measurable improvement in people's attitudes towards ageing especially when programmes combined education about ageing with real interaction between age groups6.


The most effective approach pairs accurate education about ageing with activities that build empathy6, helping push back against the mistaken idea that there are only so many jobs to go around and that older workers are taking them from younger people. Programs that bring generations together, through shared housing or joint activities, for example, help build natural, lasting bonds between age groups. Finally, hiring algorithms need to be regularly checked and audited to catch and remove age related bias, so the digital hiring process is fair for everyone3.


Conclusion


Ageism is one of the biggest threats to a stable future. It wastes valuable talent and experience, speeds up biological ageing through chronic stress and is increasingly built into the AI systems that shape our lives. But this doesn't have to be our future. By changing how we think about ageing, from something to fear to something we can master, and by pushing for real change in how we treat generations and design technology. Building a society that works for people of every age means more than just avoiding discrimination. It means actively creating value and opportunity across every stage of life.
